The expired license dataset provides counts of animal uses by severity for 2’659 individual licenses at the time of their expiration and ranges from 2021 to 2024 (1st quarter). The figure below represents each license with a bubble with an area proportional to the total number of animal uses under the license at the time of its expiration. The colour of each bubble and its placement on each of the four segments reflect the maximum severity reached by the license. Within each segment, licenses are ordered from left to right in increasing percentage of that maximum severity in the study. The visualization combines a swarm plot algorithm and a circle-packing algorithm meaning that the placement of the licences is not exact.
The licenses relating to cancer are indicated by a darker colour in all severity degrees. Since the expired license data does not provide disease classification, we applied a simple term search algorithm to the titles and domains of the licenses to identify cancer-related licences.
Note that the expired license data does not correspond to the annual statistics directly as the timing of the reporting is different. For further indications on how to correcltly interpret expired license data, please consult the page of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (link below).
